How Breast MRI Works
During the exam, you’ll lie face down on a padded table, with special openings designed to comfortably position your breasts. The table then moves into the MRI machine, which takes a series of detailed images. You’ll need to stay still during the scan, and you’ll hear some loud tapping or thumping sounds as the machine works — this is normal.
The test usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
In some cases, a contrast dye may be used to give your doctor a clearer, more detailed view. This is given through a small IV in your arm and helps highlight areas that may need closer attention.
Before your exam, our team will review your health history to decide if contrast is needed to get the most accurate results possible.
What Does an MRI of the Breast Show?
A Breast MRI is a screening tool designed to work along with mammograms to provide a more complete view of breast health. It is highly effective at finding cancers that may remain hidden on regular mammograms or ultrasounds, especially in dense tissue. Your doctor may recommend this study for:
- High-Risk Screening: For individuals with a strong family history of breast cancer, specific genetic mutations, or dense breast tissue.
- Cancer Evaluation: To determine the precise size and extent of a newly diagnosed tumor.
- Implant Assessment: To check the safety of silicone breast implants and find possible ruptures.
Our team follows strict screening guidelines for high-risk patients, helping you and your doctor plan the most effective treatment or monitoring strategy with absolute confidence.
