How Do X-Rays Work?
During an X-Ray procedure, a low-level beam of radiation passes through the body to create pictures of bones and organs. X-rays are ideal tools for looking at issues such as:
- Bone Conditions: fractures (broken bones), dislocated joints, arthritis, scoliosis and osteoporosis.
- Chest Conditions: for symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath or a cough. It can look for signs of infection in your lungs or congestive heart failure, pneumonia, or tuberculosis.
- Digestive System: blockages, tumors, kidney stones, and foreign objects (like swallowed items)
Because images are available so quickly, your doctor can review them right away and begin guiding your care without delay.
Safety Considerations
At Houston Medical Imaging, your safety is always our top priority. Digital X-rays use very low, safe levels of radiation. If you are pregnant or think you might be, it’s important to let your care team know. When needed, we take extra precautions to protect you and your baby during the exam.
What to Expect
X-Ray exams are designed to be fast and easy, usually taking between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the specific study. For your comfort and the best possible image quality, you may be asked to remove clothing with metal buttons or zippers or wear a gown. Once the scan is complete, you can return to your normal daily activities immediately.
Please note:
At many of our Houston area locations, digital X-Ray exams are available on a walk-in basis only and do not require a scheduled appointment time.
